With over 139 square miles and less than half of its 1950 population, Detroit is emblamatic of a number of shrinking cities.

Physical scale is huge. Infrastructure is strained. Bus service can be more than transport for people.

A birds eye view of Detroit shows access to highways, truck routes, wholesale terminals, shipping. These interchanges (indicated by red circles) are already a nexus for a parallel network of distributing goods with loading docks, road access, staging areas that can accomodate the expanded buses and mobile market fleet.

  

End of the line needn't mean end of supply

Terminus points--Cadillac Square, Tireman Place--are both destinations and the further- most extensions of the city's perimeter.

Using these endpoints (indicated by green circles) as the first stage of setting up citywide distribution points.This way, those fartherst from the red centers of acdess to food and services.

Small Containers on board

Existing buses could be used with slight modifications to accomodate storage units for quick loading and unloading at bus stops as shown.

This way, each major stop can ultimately perform the functions of a produce stand, a news kiosk, a library, a health care clinic for anywhere from as long as it takes for the next bus to a day.

  

Piggyback functons

With current bus lines running long distances for small numbers of passengers, Detroit is faced with a connundrum: Cutting back servce saves costs and life becomes more difficult for the most vulnerable populations.

Outfitting existing buses with either cargo space or a back mounted module piggybacks functions.

  

Mobile Cultural Event Space

Enliven long and short rides with cultural events. A potential arts for transit program, creative residency opportunity and direct audience feedback for all manner of events from string quartets to magicians to poetry readings.
