Reclaim the food production + social identity in Milan

The central feature of our project is design Dergano as a place for everyone, especially the objective of ensuring that urban development in Dergano will prove that attractive urban development and broad social diversity can co-exist. This extraordinary Circle Line is emphasized as an attraction and of value to the Dergano, which connect the new subway and high way, is presented as creating a unique identity and quality for Dergano as a city district. By offering a laciniated weave of urban spaces and landscape spaces along the Circle Line, we explored various urban design strategies to create a city in a cohesive and coherent landscape, to achieve sustainability in the sense of environmental, social and economic sustainability.

Urban Agriculture
As a city with huge population, Milan must take the current climate change, peak oil crisis into account and actively seek to counter it. Our project is creating a basis for developing Dergano not only into a dense, vibrant and dynamic city district, but also a self sufficient agriculture base to support its own population of 25000. Rather than seeking out sourcing agriculture outside the dense urban area, our project emphasis regional food production and give priority to the long-term solutions. Several large scale vertical farms, integrated with food market, public transport, day-care facilities, schools, other services facilities and civil works are proposed along the Circle Line and new subway system. They can be sold/rent as finished unites to promote a diverse food production targeting various consumer group. The surrounding area of these farms provides opportunities and room for sport, movement, culture and recreational activates. They become well-defined public spaces in which the living and agriculture elements are integrated in the development structure from the beginning.

Social sustainability
We designed both large scale open landscape and the small scale of spaces between buildings to show how social diversity can be ensured in Dergano. These spaces serve as meeting and gathering places. They provide opportunities for play, movement, activity and the experience of nature for everyone. The green space and subway system are important element in the cohesive structure and the attractiveness of the city, and they are pivotal in creating a diverse, vibrant city district.
